Groundbreaking celebrated at Turku Music Hall Fuuga
The groundbreaking ceremony to mark the start of construction of Turku Music Hall Fuuga was held on 16 January 2024.
Guests of honour and speakers at the event included the Finnish Minister of Science and Culture Sari Multala and the Mayor of Turku Minna Arve. Both highlighted the significance of the project as part of the City's investments in culture for the well-being of its residents and as an important attraction for visitors.
PES-Architect's Tuomas Silvennoinen, chief designer of the project, spoke of the powerful emotions that drive an architecture project from conception to completion: excitement, fear, and love. Excitement and passion create a sense of ownership at the start of the project, gluing the various collaborators and stakeholders together to overcome the inevitable fears and uncertainties faced over the course of such a demanding project. Love and affection for the project build the commitment to carry it successfully through - to become "locally beloved and internationally recognised", as the alliance team's slogan goes.
The foundation stone was laid with a time capsule containing the day's newspapers, Finnish euro coins, as well as the spring 2024 brochure and latest CD of the Turku Philharmonic Orchestra, whose new home Fuuga will be.
Music Hall Fuuga will house a 1,300-seat concert hall with world-class acoustics, a 300-seat multifunctional hall, rehearsal spaces, and a rooftop terrace and restaurant open to visitors even outside performance hours.
The alliance project team includes the City of Turku as the client, Hartela, PES-Architects and WSP Finland, with Laidun-design and Akukon Ltd & Kahle Acoustics as subcontractors.
