The latest phase of the Helsinki Airport long-haul terminal expansion was completed in spring 2019 with the opening of the first part of West Pier. The extension features 13,000 square metres of additional space with five new gates for wide-body aircraft, restaurants and a premium lounge.
As passengers may spend a long time at the airport, the aim was to design comfortable spaces with places to relax and unwind. The West Pier continues the design of the previously completed South Pier and Aukio expansions. The theme of Finnish nature is reflected in custom-designed wood details and furnishing. Wall surfaces are decorated with nine-metre-tall wooden reliefs made from Finnish massive birch. Large luminaires made from translucent plywood hang from the ceiling in undulating cloud-like forms, and even the charging stations for mobile devices are shaped into trees.
