Construction begins on new Hippos sports complex in Jyväskylä
Construction of the new sports and exercise facilities at the Hippos site in Jyväskylä is set to begin in December 2025, following the signing of all key agreements at the project’s kick-off meeting on 28 October 2025. The €210 million, partly privately funded investment will create a unique hub for amateur and professional sports, research and education in Finland.
The complex will be built in phases in just over two years. The area comprises a sports centre, a centre of expertise, an ice sports arena and a parking facility. Construction will start with the parking hall in December 2025, followed by the sports centre and centre of expertise in January 2026, and the ice arena in spring 2026. All facilities are set to be completed by the end of 2027.
The 33,400 m2 sports centre will accommodate over 20 sports, including indoor arenas and facilities for athletics, gymnastics, martial arts and group classes. The ice sports arena will feature seating for 5,600 spectators at sporting events and 6,850 for concerts. The 18,050 m2 centre of expertise will host research, education, office and hospitality spaces.
“PES-Architects has been involved in the development process from the very start of the project for more than a decade. We’re very excited to see this locally and nationally significant sports hub finally moving to realisation,” says Tuomas Silvennoinen, Senior Partner and COB at PES-Architects.
